What is the point of school if not to educate children?

My students have been asking me why they still have to learn and do work now that the standardized tests are over. Trying to explain that the test is not the end point of learning, or even the point of learning, is an exercise in futility. Then they say, “Why do we have to learn? It’s so close to the end of the year?” I’ve been saying, “We learn until June 13,” which is the last day of school.

A little bit ago I had them answer the question “Do you think taxpayers should pay for public education?” Most said yes, though a few, some of the smartest and most hard working kids, said no. The hardworking kids are frustrated with the ones who just want to run around, play games, fight and play fight with each other, and disrespect/abuse the teachers.
