Mind Body Dualism and Getting Back in Shape
If there is just one me, how come "I" want to do things that my body doesn't want me to do? Trader Joe's gummy candies, exhibit A.
You know how when you eat something that you know won’t help you reach your health goals you sometimes think, “I deserve a treat?”
Or people will say, “Give your body what it wants.”
How can there be a difference between “I” and “my body?” This makes no sense but was visited upon us by the Greeks thousands of years ago and reinforced by many others.
I am going back to the gym today. My gym has this fantastic training program where you can basically get personal training for a fourth of the cost or less because they do it in groups. So I’m training with a fabulous trainer. I need to because I’ve gotten out of shape for only the second time in my life and a) I hate it b) I want to be very strong and healthy at seventy and beyond, so I’d better not waste another minute.
It’s hard, and last time I was very sore afterward. Periods of illness have resulted in way too much time inactive, but fortunately I have been a serious exerciser of one kind or another almost my whole life, going back to when we did the Jane Fonda workout in the Interlochen basement. I miss the Jane Fonda workout. I’m sure it’s on YouTube.
Who do I think the “I” is who wants Trader Joe’s gummy candies if “my body” gets sick when I eat too many of them?
Scandinavian Swimmers are delicious, btw, but there way too many lobsters. The red ones.
Short entry today as I am off to the gym for an 8 am training class, then to work. The gym has great showers with tea tree oil shower gel shampoo conditioner and lotion. There are benefits to actually having a full time job. a) stability b) co-workers I love c) ability to do even more good, I hope d) can afford gym membership.
It’s true that you don’t have much if you don’t have your health. I plan to jump on that way before it’s too late.
For our next entry…. “Everyone has their red lines.” Including this guy:
I used to love the Jane Fonda workouts!!! Good for you for getting to the gym again!
