"but not when I might be trampled in a fight or accidentally knocked down by an out of control seventh grader in a classroom where only certified special ed teachers should be."
Iβm so sorry substitute teaching is not working out for you. My daughter was a high school math teacher for six years. She tried three different schools and she got her special Ed extension. But ultimately teaching seriously spiked her mental health issues and she had to leave. Took her a while to get on her feet, started and was laid off from three different jobs. But now she has a stable clerical sort of job close to home. Sheβs earning two thirds of what sheβd be earning if she were teaching and her ego took a blow. She expected to be a high powered something or other by age 31. But sheβs dealing with it and sheβs happy enough and my son in law is doing well enough that they can afford for her to make less money (but they canβt afford for her not to work at all). She seriously wonβt do anything even slightly related to teaching, like she wonβt tutor at all even though sheβs good at tutoring math. Part of the problem was that she student taught at a decent school but could only get jobs in tougher, more inner city schools.
I am glad you are back. I try to remember that all we can do is fix the little bit of the world in which we live. Sending hugs. π€

Thing is--we live in a "Special Ed" World.
Sending love.
