If a cupcake were green, what flavor should it be?
Looking for the good.
Over the last few days, in my efforts to keep the kids engaged, I’ve been asking what is truly a pressing question for our times:
“If a cupcake were green, what flavor should the cupcake be?”
At the boys’ school, the kids immediately said, “Lime!”
A few said mint. Some said chocolate. One very smart young man suggested vanilla, since a white cake would be the easiest to get the green food coloring into. But overall, the consensus was lime. Since a friend of mine at the Zendo made an amazing lime cake with real limes a few weeks ago for our special luncheon, I know this can be done. Perhaps I shall attempt to make lime cupcakes for the fellows at some point, with permission of the Assistant Principal of course.
I went to the co-ed school today and posed the same question.
“Apple,” said several kids in an early class, in unison. Consensus was apple. They thought lime was so weird as to be beyond the possibility of discussion.
Another class also said apple.
These schools are about a mile away from each other, on the same numbered streets and different cross streets. Same neighborhood. All black kids. There is no demographic difference to explain this huge difference in opinion on what flavor a green cupcake should be.
I make a great green apple pie, so I’m sure I could make a green apple cupcake.
My idea was a green velvet cupcake, like a red velvet cupcake but green. Here is a recipe:

I don’t have a picture of a green cupcake that will download, so I’m posting an old picture of lowfat muffins that I sent to a friend in the low-carb world years ago. We were making fun of high sugar, high calorie foods that get marketed as “lowfat,” as though that was good for you. I fell in with a bunch of very cool low carb researchers back in 2009 and I’m still kicking around that world. We used to celebrate family birthdays by a visit to a hibachi restaurant, where we could watch the chef cook our meal, enjoy the show and a good meal, finished with a dish of green tea ice cream! All my kids loved the green tea ice cream.
I made avocado frosting for a birthday cake a long time ago. I liked it but the kids didn’t. It was made out of real avocado, naturally green. The texture is appropriate, too.
Also, pistachio flavored Dubai chocolate seems to be the in trend green right now. Pricey type of treat.
I love apple pie with granny smith because I love the tartness.
