1)Astute kid. BTW, I saw a picture of the Lubavitcher Rebbe's wife, taken in the 1940s. She was stylishly dressed for the era, was wearing a hat that didn't cover up her hair, and a bit more than her collar bones was showing. Standards have changed in the past 40-50 years (but only we who are older than that would know...), but nobody will admit it.
When in my 20s I worked with man in a medical laboratory during one of my post college random jobs. His name was Bernard and he was Portuguese Catholic. One day we were having lunch together at a Mexican restaurant where he always ordered his meal with hot sauce. For reasons I can't recall he and a customer at another table got into an argument and the other guy asked Bernard if he was Jewish. He immediately say "Yes," and the guy at the other table responded, "I thought so," in a derogatory tone. Bernard said, "What the fuck does that mean?" The other guy didn't respond and that ended things.
When we left the restaurant Bernard was still hot, told me he wanted to punch the guy. He told me he didn't like it when people made snide remarks about Jews. Bernard had dark hair, dark eyes, swarthy complexion, told me growing up outside of Providence, Rhode Island, in a Portuguese community, he often got mistaken for being Jewish by people who didn't know him or his family, and often got into fights because of it. He told me he didn't mind it when people mistook him for being Jewish, and if they asked, he always said yes, even though he was Catholic. When I asked him why he told people he was Jewish, he clarified he never told people he was Jewish, unless they asked. He felt to do otherwise didn't feel right to him. I told Bernard he was my kind of Jew.
I think Bernard should do his genes. Something like 30% of Portugues have Jewish ancestry. He doesn't have to do anything about it if he doesn't want to, but it's something to know.
