You are the sort of teacher I wish I had when younger. Luckily, I did have a few like you. Sounds like they are lucky to have you, and vice versa.

“No, I am a figment of your imagination,” -- LOL! And so much more wisdom in this column, but cut/paste would just take too long.

I can see you are a wonderful teacher, & you had a wise mentor.

I worked for 14 yrs in a Title X family planning facility, taking care of (among others) young women from the 'hood.' I'm not like them at all, but I related well to them, and taught them things they needed to know.

Then I worked in a place where I had to tip-toe around some people's sensibilities. My last job before retirement was in clinical research, with a crowd more like the first.

You are doing God's work. Your Dad would be very proud.

Thanks so much. My step mother was a kindergarten teacher so we talk about it. Her experience was not urban like this though. These kids are never boring and they are far from politically correct!

Thanks for this article. First, students should ever know their teacher’s political beliefs. Teachers are there to teach not indoctrinate. A teacher’s job is to help kids to develop their own BS meters by being curious and questioning things. Also it’s a problem for this country that very few kids want to be teachers. Because of this there is a teacher shortage. Part of reason is in spite of what folks say the job gets no respect. This has caused standards to be lowered out of desperation. A really sad situation for this country!!
