My father, the son of immigrants, went on to be a teacher in his early life. In his retirement years he went back to teaching. The middle schoolers he taught were all children or immigrants or immigrants themselves. He taught them US constitutional law. I look at this as full circle, my father a 1st generation american teaching the children of immigrants a love of the US.
He taught middle school! That's awesome! I actually preferred teaching immigrants and kids of immigrants. The neighborhoods in Reading and Philly where I taught a primarily Spanish speaking population were very tough, tons of crime, plenty of gang involvement, and lots of behavior problems, but there wasn't the kind of complete cultural dysfunction that I found out here in West Philly. A lot of parents were very involved and pushed their children to do well.
